The Ouroboros, the dragon devouring its own tail, was employed in ancient alchemical texts, as a symbol of universal unity. Maier associates a more specific meaning with it, that it represents the ‘Unity of Matter and the Subject of the Wise; or more precisely the Mercury of the Wise.’
